Reflection and Innovation
It was hard getting through what they had decided to call the asteroid system. No one had ever seen so many asteroids, some as large as a small moon, in one system. They had to clear out three more asteroids. They could not use the bombers again; Zeke was sure the asteroids talked with each other. To counteract that, he had a destroyer race past with the fighters and bombers following. The cruiser with the Kolqux battleship would fly in to give it the final knockout blow. The second destroyer provided an escort for the Kolqux carrier. Which was kept out of the action except for their fighters.
But get through; they did with minimal losses. Jeanne and Zeke had at first been surprised that the Chohish had not upgraded the asteroid bases with updated defensive armament. But then figured the Chohish had never had any other hostile forces get this close to their home planets before. With that in mind, possibly the Chohish decided to concentrate their resources on the more remote installations to stop any enemy advance. So, the Chohish left the asteroid platforms as a backup, just in case. One additional item supported this hypothesis. The Chohish were several versions back from what they had encountered, and the pilots did not show any experience.
Why the Chohish did not have mining operations in the asteroid system puzzled many. That was until they got back a result of their scans. Rock and dirt aplenty, useable minerals, barely present. That could explain why no planets had been formed even though the material to do so was.
In fact, since they started on their trip, no significant deposits of lendolium were detected. Maybe that explained why the Chohish started out in the direction of the Sorath those millennia ago. The Kolqux had been conquered after the Chohish and Sorath war had ended. So, the Chohish must have decided it was better to try another direction.
Entering the next system had to be done very cautiously, as they now should be within half a dozen systems of the Chohish home planets. This system was the opposite of the asteroid system. Where that system was filled with asteroids and debris, this one was almost entirely bare.
âSystem is empty of any Chohish presence, Captain, none that we can detect at this time,â reported Selena.
âIt looks like this system is empty of everything. We will be in this system for a good amount of time. While we transition to the exit, this will give us time to relax and get some rest. Isolde, please get in touch with the different departments and have them meet us in the conference room in two hours. Selena, ask for representation from the Jackal, Fox, and the two Kolqux ships,â requested Zeke. âThat should be enough for everyone to assign any projects and get cleaned up.â
Standing, Zeke stretched to loosen tight muscles. âI have been sitting too much. After our meeting, want to join me in the gym?â he asked Jeanne.
